ABSTRACT:
Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), a highly invasive aquatic plant, had remained largely unexplored for its medicinal potential. Despite its widespread presence near lakes, water hyacinth had not been systematically studied as a potential medication. Phytochemicals, colorful, fragrant, and flavorful secondary metabolites found in plants, offer numerous health benefits. Various phytochemical extraction techniques, both traditional and modern, have been employed. This study investigated the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of water hyacinth ethanol and water extracts, as well as conducted phytochemical screening of their contents. Preliminary phytochemical tests revealed that ethanol extracts contained saponins, while both water and ethanol extracts contained glycosides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, phytosterol, and terpenoids. Notably, alkaloids, proteins, carbohydrates, reducing sugar, and amino acids were absent from all extracts. The objective of this research was to determine the phytochemical constituents of water hyacinth extracts (ethanol and distilled water) and assess their antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities.
