ABSTRACT:
Proper disposal of domestic wastewater is vital for sanitation and public health, particularly in small villages or residential colonies. Septic tanks and soak pits are a viable alternative for decentralised wastewater treatment in places without centralised sewage infrastructure. This study covers the design of a septic tank and soak pit for a 100-person population using basic sanitary engineering criteria. Design estimates for wastewater flow, septic tank volume, retention time, soak pit sizing were conducted using per capita wastewater generation and local soil infiltration characteristics. The findings show that a correctly constructed septic tank soak pit system assures safe effluent disposal, lowers environmental contamination, and promotes sustainable sanitation practices.
