ABSTRACT:
Rapid urbanisation, coupled with escalating population growth and climate variability, has intensified pressure on conventional surface and groundwater resources, resulting in declining water availability in urban areas. In this context, rainwater harvesting (RWH) has emerged as a sustainable, decentralised, and cost-effective water conservation strategy. This study presents a comprehensive design and assessment of a rooftop rainwater harvesting system for a building, focusing on estimating potential rainwater yield, hydraulic design of system components, and evaluating its functional and environmental benefits. Rainfall data, effective roof catchment area, runoff coefficients, and storage requirements are systematically analysed to determine the harvestable rainwater potential. Key components of the system, including catchment surfaces, conveyance networks, filtration units, and storage structures, are designed in accordance with prevailing engineering standards and best practices. The performance of the proposed RWH system is evaluated based on water savings, reduced municipal water demand, and contributions to groundwater recharge and stormwater management. The results indicate that a properly designed rainwater harvesting system can substantially supplement non-potable water requirements, reduce dependence on centralised water supply systems, and enhance urban water sustainability. The findings of this study provide practical design guidelines and demonstrate the viability of rainwater harvesting as an integral component of sustainable building water management in rapidly urbanising regions.
